NEW: Soldotna Office – Free Tutoring:

We are very excited to have Rebecca Weaver, Assistant Professor from the Kenai Peninsula College, at the Soldotna office every Thursday, starting September 24th, from 12:00pm to 2:00pm to tutor students and parents in math, physics, chemistry and science for free! If you are a parent or a student that needs help in any of these areas, please call us at 714-8880 to make an appointment.

 

Fall Artwork Welcome!

The Soldotna office is collecting fall themed artwork to display during September and October! Here are some ideas: apples, pumpkins, leaves, seasonal colors, animals, etc… Please stop by anytime during office hours (8:00am-4:00pm) and drop off your fall themed artwork. Remember to have your child’s name on the art piece and we look forward to seeing our artists in action!

 

Central Peninsula Gym Time:

Our organized gym time will start back up October 8th. We meet at the Kenai Recreation Center every Tuesday from 12-2pm. All ages are welcome, this activity is free and please remember to wear non-skid sole shoes. If you have any questions you can call our office at 714-8880.

 

Homer SPARC Gym Time:

Come join other Connections Homeschool kids at the SPARC for basketball, pickleball, soccer, and just plain running around every Wednesday from 1:30 – 2:30. This is a free event, but students must check in with SPARC every week, so please go online and create an account if you don’t have one already.

SEWARD: ADF & G Salmon Egg Take @ Bear Lake Weir:

As part of the “Salmon in the Classroom” program, ADF&G invites students to participate in the silver salmon egg take at the Bear Lake Weir.  The short presentation will be on October 9th from 12:45 am – 1:45pm.   Directions:  Head out of town approximately 6 miles and take Bear Lake Rd. on the right.  Go approximately 1 mile until you see the Weir and the crew.  Have fun!

 

HOMER: Silver Salmon Egg Take at the Anchor River:

As part of the “Salmon in the Classroom” program, ADF&G invites students to participate in the silver salmon egg take at the Anchor River.  The short presentation will be on October 10th from 1:20-1:55pm, and students will meet at the first parking lot to the right off of Anchor River Road.  Directions:  turn on to the Old Sterling Highway (next to the Anchor River Inn), cross the wooden bridge, take a right on Anchor River Road, first parking lot to the right. College Fair:

Representatives from more than 30 colleges will be available with information and to answer your questions. You can find more info on who will be there here: http://cacfair.blogs.kpbsd.k12.ak.us/ Students and parents can learn more about scholarships, loans, state and federal financial aid programs at the Financial Aid booth.

No appointments needed but we are urging ALL students to register with https://kpbsd.gotocollegefairs.com as this saves the student and the college/university time at each booth.

  • The student will register, entering their demographics
  • They will then be assigned a barcode
  • They will bring the barcode with them to the fair
  • The vendor will have a scanner to scan said barcode and this will pull up all the demographics the student registered with

It’s a slick way for colleges/universities to share/send info to the students.

HOMER: Seasonal Stencil with Soft Pastel Art lesson:

Who: kindergarten-4th grade
What: During this time students will review seasons and items that we find with each season, as well as why we have seasons. Students will create their own season art with an emphasis on the elements and principles of art.

Hay Maze @ Solid Rock Bible Camp: PLEASE RSVP:

Please join us Thursday, Oct. 17th from 1-3:00pm for our annual Solid Rock Hay Maze! And it’s FREE for Connections students (parents pay $6.00, cash only please). All home school families are invited, the cost is $6 (cash only) per person for non-Connections students/families. Please bundle up for this event; gloves, hats, warm layers and flashlights are encouraged. We are looking forward to seeing all of you, and please feel free to bring a guest. The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center:

The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center (AWCC) is a sanctuary dedicated to preserving Alaska’s wildlife through conservation, education, research and quality animal care. Come join Connections on Friday, October 18th from 12:30-2:30pm for an hour long walking tour around AWCC and learn about bears, moose, muskox, wood bison, and meet Snickers the porcupine! Connections will have a grill and provide hot dogs and chips, families are welcome bring a snack to share. The cost is $6.25pp (reimbursable for Connections students) please tell the ticket attendant that “you are with Connections”.   RSVP with Reubin rpayne@kpbsd.org or call 907-714-8880 to reserve your spot.

 

HOMER: Refreshments and Reimbursements:

Who: all Connections parents
What: Are you ready to turn in reimbursements but don’t know how to fill out the form? Do you have questions about reimbursements? Just need a refresher on what is covered, or you are filling out forms for multiple kids or advisors and have questions? Join us for a working session with refreshments and the Homer Office team. Don’t forget to bring your receipts!

SOLDOTNA: Navigating Homeschool Paperwork:

What: Connections advisors and staff will walk you through some of our common forms and procedures, hopefully saving you lots of time and energy in the long run! Our goal is that you’ll walk out of this get-together with a solid understanding of reimbursements, semester reports, the vendor direct payment process, eligibility, and any other forms or procedures you have questions about. We’ll provide snacks and book fair coupons to all attendees. We hope to see you there!

Who: All Homeschool Families are welcome
When: Friday, October 25th from 2-3pm
Where: Soldotna Public Library
Why: To help homeschool families become more familiar and comfortable with the various forms, documents, and procedures that come along with being part of a homeschool program.

 

Homer CPR and First Aid Certification (Including Child and Infant CPR):

This class is Monday, October 28th.  The class is 6-8 hours and recommended for 7th-12th graders.  The cost is $55 plus $10 for the book.  There are 12 seats for the class.  For more information or to RSVP please contact Jake Parrett at jparrett@kpbsd.org

 

HOMER: Colors of Light:

Who: Grades 3-6th
What: Students will learn about the light spectrum and assemble an easily built spectroscope that allows them to separate incoming light into its component colors, forming a light spectrum.

Soldotna Connections Annual Fall Festival:

Come join the Soldotna Connections office for our annual Fall Festival: October 31st from 1-3pm. We will have food, activities, games and trick-or-treating for students. Costumes encouraged, all ages and all homeschool families welcome! This is always a fun and well attended event that students look forward to so we hope to see you here!

 

AVTEC Tour:

All Connections High School Students are invited to attend a free guided tour, lunch included, of AVTEC in Seward on Friday, November 8th. AVTEC offers a variety of educational programs such as: Construction, Welding, Heavy Equipment Mechanics, Maritime Studies, Electronics, Culinary Arts and many other courses.

Kenai Watershed Forum:

The Connections Homeschool program has partnered with the Kenai Watershed Forum to provide some exciting opportunities for our students this year. Your student can participate in lessons revolving around the healthy aquatic habitats on the peninsula. Students will have hands on experiences with dissecting fish, collecting water samples, and much more. Please make plans to attend our Meet & Greet event on October 1st from 3:00-4:00 at the Watershed Forum office to learn more about the programs. Below is a schedule for the events planned for the 2019-2020 school year.

Kenai National Wildlife Refuge Activities:

Connections has partnered with the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge to bring several FREE exciting activities to our homeschool families. Space is limited so please sign up asap with Kellie Davidson: kdavidson@kpbsd.org or call 714-8880 to reserve your spot:

  • 10/23 – BATS! From  2pm-3pm

Join us at the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge Education Center for an interactive lesson about bats.  Students will learn about the fascinating ways bats hunt and survive.  Activities include games and hands on activities.

  • 11/13 – Owl Pellet Dissection from 1pm-3pm

Students are invited to participate in several exciting activities to learn about owls. The wildlife ranger will lead discussions about where owls live and how the survive in their habitat.  Each student will dissect an owl pellet so that they may better understand what animals owls prey upon.  Please sign your student up with their advisor as space is limited to 25 students.

  • 12/05 –  Paper Making – 2 sessions: 1:00-2:00 and 2:30-3:30

Families are invited to take part in a paper-making lesson. Students will learn about the paper making process from the forest to the factory.  This session will allow students to make their own piece of paper. Please sign your student up with their advisor as space is limited to 25 students per session.
