Welcome to the 2018-2019 Connections School year! Once a week we like to email our families with updates, information and activities happening in our Connections program. Battle of the Books:

Calling all readers to our annual Battle of the Books club! We will start meeting in November but students can get a jumpstart and begin reading the books now. Competitive teams are grades 3rd-12th. Books can be found at the public library, Connections offices will have copies that can be checked out or you can purchase the books using allotment funds. Contact your advisor if interested in participating in Battle of the Books:

Central Peninsula Gym Time:

Central Peninsula families are invited to come to gym time every Tuesday from 12-2pm at the Kenai Rec Center starting OCTOBER 2ND (NEW START DATE). We have organized activities, games and also free time for students of all ages to participate. Other homeschool families are invited and encouraged to participate. Please note: all students must have an adult present. Come check it out!

Outdoor Club First Activity – Gold Panning on the Kenai Beach:

Connections Homeschool Program’s new “Outdoor Club” will meet twice per month to explore a variety of fun outdoor & educational activities for all homeschool students. Students are welcome to attend as many of the meetings/activities they wish. Contact Mark Wackler at mwackler@kpbsd.k12.ak.us or 714-8880 for more info!

FIRST ACTIVITY: Let’s meet at the Kenai City Beach parking lot (at the end of S. Spruce Street) at 1pm to do some gold panning! Please bring warm clothes + waterproof footwear. Cost is $25 per student which can be pulled from their allotment. Parents are welcome to watch free of charge or pay $25 (cash or check) when they arrive if they wish to participate. Space may be limited so please RSVP with Mark Wackler: mwackler@kpbsd.k12.ak.us

Soldotna & Homer Offices: Thursday Art Show:

The Soldotna & Homer offices are celebrating student art, grades K-12, every month! Paintings, drawings, ceramics, photography, digital art, etc… all are welcome and encouraged! This month’s theme is Outdoors and all artists will receive a small treat for participating. Submit your artwork anytime between now and Thursday. We will have our first gallery show on Thursday, September 20th from 3-4pm where we will enjoy s’mores and celebrate our artists!

Next month our gallery show will be Thursday, October 4th from 3-4pm and the theme is Fall Art
November: Thankful theme! Thursday, Nov. 8th from 3-4pm
December: Winter theme! Thursday, Dec 13th from 1-3pm. We also have ornament craft stations and a dessert potluck!
**please note: any and all submissions are welcome regardless of theme**

Silver Salmon Egg Take at the Anchor River:

As part of the “Salmon in the Classroom” program, ADF&G invites students to participate in the silver salmon egg take at the Anchor River. The short presentation will be on October 4th from 12:25-1pm, and students will meet at the first parking lot to the right off of Anchor River Road. Directions: turn on to the Old Sterling Highway (next to the Anchor River Inn), cross the wooden bridge, take a right on Anchor River Road, first parking lot to the right. ARWA’s 2018 Water Conservation Poster Contest:

The Alaska Rural Water Association (ARWA) is inviting teachers throughout Alaska to enter students’ artwork in ARWA’s 2018 Water Conservation Poster Contest. The contest is open to all Alaska public and private school K – 8th graders. Individual winners will receive $100 and earn $100 of school supplies for their class. The theme for the contest is “We are Water!” Teachers are encouraged to discuss the importance of water resources in our state as a part of the project. Water facts to consider:

· 70% of the earth’s surface is covered in water
· All life on earth depends on water
· The human body is made up of 60% water
· Less than 2% of the earth’s water supply is fresh water
· Statewide average consumptive water use is 27 million gallons per day
· Icecaps contain the greatest amount of fresh water on earth

All entries must be drawn vertically (portrait) on 8.5” X 11” paper. Entries must be postmarked no later than October 19, 2018. One first place winner will be selected from our three grade divisions: K-2, 3-5, and 6-8. Winners will be chosen and announced at ARWA’s 20th Annual Training Conference, October 31, 2018 during the award ceremony. Students and teachers need not be present to win. Interested in Earning your Professional Merchant Mariner Credentials Before HS Graduation? AVTEC’s Young Mariner Program fast tracks high school students into a high paying, exciting maritime career without incurring any debt!

Students whom successfully complete this course have access to grant funding to pay tuition, room & board and US Coast Guard Credential fees for ALL AVTEC Maritime Training courses.

REGISTRATION IS OPEN and will close a week before class starts or as soon as fills. Don’t delay!
