Caterpillars:
The Soldotna Connections office is growing caterpillars! Our caterpillars will eat, spin silk and grow for approximately 7 to 10 days before changing into chrysalides. During this incredible period of growth, they will shed their exoskeletons 4 times and grow more than 10 times their original size! When they have finished growing, the caterpillars will climb to the top of the cup and form a chrysalis.
The magical birth of a butterfly happens surprisingly quickly. The butterfly will climb out of the split and need some time to rest and recover after their prolonged and complex transformation. Once its wings are fully expanded and the proboscis is fused, your butterfly is ready for flight and food!
Come to the Soldotna Connections office and check out our new friends!

First Thursday Art Show – Homer:
Homer Connections is calling for submissions of art to hang in the gallery (office) in May! Kids in grades K-12 are invited to submit artwork, we are excited to show off our youth’s artwork! We’ll have a Spring Theme for the art, but any and all submissions are welcome. We’ll kick off the display with a First Thursday gallery viewing event with cookies, juice, and a small art project on Thursday May 3rd. Even if you don’t submit art, come check out what others are doing!
Please contact Derek Bynagle at dbynagle@kpbsd.org or call 226-1880 to reserve your spot.
Date: Thursday May 3rd
Time: 2:30pm to 3:30pm
Location: Homer Connections back office
The deadline for entering artwork is Tuesday May 1st (earlier is even better)
See attached document for submission guidelines and art work labels.

Safe Sitter Class:
This nationally recognized class is a great way to prepare our children to care for each other as well as become certified to babysit other children. Please see the attached flyer for dates. Safe Sitter® can teach you the babysitting skills to do it well! Becoming a Safe Sitter® means you’ll gain confidence and learn how to handle situations that may happen on the job or at home. Children need to be between the ages of 11 & 13 to attend. Each class has room for 13 students. The cost is $50.00 and can be reimbursable by Connections. For more information please contact Marcia Knowlton 598-0950 (parent contact) or Nicole Price 714-4775 (Hospital contact) and see the attached flyer.

Kenai River Clean Up:
This event has become a hit with the community and Connections does our best to play our part to help the cause. We’re currently recruiting student and parent volunteers to help clean up the river bank and make a positive impact on our community. Volunteers will meet at the Soldotna Visitor’s Center parking lot on May 9th at 11am. We will clean for a minimum of 1 hour, and we will provide a lunch after the cleaning is complete. Bags & gloves will be provided, please wear waterproof shoes or boots and dress for the weather. If you have questions contact Mark Wackler at mwackler@kpbsd.k12.ak.us or 714-8880.

Salmon Celebration:
On Thursday, May 10, 2018 the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish, will be holding the 18th annual “Salmon Celebration” in Kasilof at the Johnson Lake State Campground from 12:00 to 2:00 pm. This Salmon Celebration is held to increase school student’s awareness of salmon and to foster a sense of stewardship towards this valuable natural resource. Students will able to release rainbow trout catchables from the William Jack Hernandez Sport Fish Hatchery as part of ADF&G’s lake stocking program at a separate activity/station. Nearly thirty hands-on salmon related activity booths (catch and release, face painting, salmon wheel of misfortune, watershed model, salmon life cycle, macroinvertebrate touch tank, animal tracks, mammal skulls and skins, water safety, water quality tests, juvenile & adult salmon identification, practice spin casting and fly casting, and so much more!) will be set up for students to visit during the event.
It takes about 2 hours to do all the activities. Great lunch locations can be found throughout the campground! If you plan to have lunch, please allow for additional time to complete the activities. If you have questions or to RSVP please contact Reubin Payne: rpayne@kpbsd.org
